Action EFT Emotional Freedom Techniques

That’s what I feel when I look at this picture:

  • Excitement
  • Enthusiasm
  • Energy
  • Motivation
  • Joy
  • Optimism

These are all words I associate with Action.

Action is:

  •  Movement
  •  Achievement
  •  Attaining a goal
  •  Accomplishment
  •  Fire in your belly
  •  Yang (male) energy

Feeling Good

Action is what makes us feel alive.  It is well known now how important exercise is to physical and mental health.  Once the body is moving it releases endorphins which make us happy and is often recommended for people suffering from depression.  Even a walk around the block can really help when we are feeling stressed by allowing the body to burn up excess adrenalin.

Taking Action

Ideas are wonderful and are the beginning of the process of creativity, but to bring an idea into reality we must take some form of action.

Leonardo da Vince said:

“Knowing is not enough, we must apply.  Being willing is not enough; we must do.”

A Sense of Accomplishment

I’ve just finished doing my taxes this week. Getting everything ready to take to the accountant felt quite overwhelming and stressful at one point – spreadsheets, receipts, bank accounts ahhh!  I felt very resistant to sitting down with all that paperwork and kept putting it off – it all felt too difficult.

Then I tapped on these blocks to clear this resistance and was able to start the process.  Once I actually started to do something I felt so much better and when I handed everything over to my accountant, I felt such a sense of relief and accomplishment.

Do Your Best

In the words of that wise philosopher, Yoda:

“Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”

He is suggesting that when you do act, give it your best effort.  It is only when we look back and think – if only I’d worked harder I would have got a better result.  I keep saying this to my son Nicholas who is doing his HSC this year.  “Just do the best that you can”, no-one can ask for any more.

The opposite of action is inaction or paralysis.  The definition of procrastination is to delay or postpone action, to put off doing something.

There can be several reasons for procrastination: overwhelm, fear of failure, fear of not being perfect, fear of success, or fear of making the wrong decision.  All of these fears can stop us moving forward and achieving our goals.

It is easy to get overwhelmed in our busy lives – there is so much to do and often there is a lot of pressure on us to get things done.  When we feel overwhelmed it makes us less productive.

Fear of Failure/Perfectionism
Another reason people may have for not taking action is a fear of failure.  Perhaps you were shamed, judged or criticised as a child for making a mistake and began to believe that it wasn’t safe to get it wrong, that you had to be perfect. Maybe because of this you are afraid to start new projects or relationships.

The irony is that the only way we learn is by making mistakes.  If you didn’t make mistakes you would never have learned to walk or talk.

Thomas Edison said: “I failed my way to success.” He said he learned 10,000 ways not to make a light bulb before he got it right, He knew that the only way to succeed was to fail.

It is good to remember that no one is perfect, that it is what makes us human and interesting. It is why other people can relate to us.

Fear of Success
The other side of the coin is a fear of success. We may not feel safe to be successful, even though this is what we think we want.  We may not want to be too visible, or be more successful than our parents/siblings so we sabotage our own efforts.

An exercise I use in my EFT practice is to ask a client to pick a goal that they want to achieve and then ask them – what is the downside of achieving it?   Maybe you could try this as an exercise. For example, if you think that being successful means you will be too busy to spend time with your family then you will stop yourself from becoming too successful. You can tap to let go of this belief which is a block to achieving your goal.

Making the Wrong Decision
Perhaps you made a decision in the past that had negative consequences and you are so afraid of making the same mistake again you are paralysed into inaction.

Actions speak louder than words

Our words and our actions are a great indication of the kind of person we are.

Ultimately our actions will reveal the truth about us.

I love this quote:

Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

Regrets about not taking Action

Some of my biggest regrets are the times I haven’t acted, when I haven’t taken a chance, when I wish I had said or done something but didn’t.

Buddha said:

“There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth…not going all the way and not starting.”
